The Ancient Art of Badam Ragda: A 500-Year Tradition

In the dusty akharas of Varanasi and Kolhapur, long before protein shakes and energy drinks existed, Indian wrestlers had already perfected the ultimate performance beverage — Badam Ragda.

Origins in the Akhara

The tradition dates back over 500 years. Pehlwans (traditional Indian wrestlers) needed a drink that could fuel their grueling 6-hour training sessions. Commercial supplements didn't exist. What they had was nature's finest — almonds, saffron, poppy seeds, melon seeds, and cardamom.

The key was the preparation method. The Kundi-Sota — a stone mortar and wooden pestle — was the original "cold-press" technology. Unlike modern blenders that generate friction heat (destroying delicate oils and enzymes), the Kundi-Sota preserved every nutrient through slow, deliberate pounding.

The Morning Ritual

In every akhara, the sound of the sota striking the kundi was the first sound of morning. Before the rooster crowed, before the azaan, before the temple bells — the rhythmic thud of wood on stone announced the start of a new day of training.

Each pehlwan received a customized blend. Some got extra almonds for muscle recovery. Others received more saffron for endurance. The master of the akhara knew each wrestler's needs and prepared accordingly.

What Makes It Special

A single 200ml serving of authentic Badam Ragda delivers a nutritional profile that puts most modern supplements to shame:

  • 20+ whole almonds — cold-ground to preserve oils
  • Saffron strands — natural anti-inflammatory
  • Poppy seeds — traditional recovery aid
  • Melon seeds — plant-based protein
  • Cardamom — digestive support
  • Rose petals — cooling properties

Zero preservatives. Zero added sugar. Zero compromise.

Reviving the Tradition

At Namma Kundi, we believe some things shouldn't be modernized — they should be preserved. Every bottle we produce uses the same Kundi-Sota method that powered India's warriors for centuries. It takes longer. It costs more. But the result is something a blender can never replicate.
